Food Waste
Surprising as it may be, the #1 category or 21% of municipal solid waste entering landfills each year is food waste. In fact, a whopping 40% of edible food produced in America ends up being wasted. That’s nearly 400 lbs. for every American, with an average cost of $1,800 per year for a family of four. At the same time, 1 in 7 or 42 million Americans face food insecurity every day and less than 1/3 of the food we throw out would be enough to keep them well fed.
In 2015, the Environmental Protection Agency set a goal of 50% reduction in food waste by 2030. Keep Nebraska Beautiful believes that Nebraskans can meet this important goal, and is dedicated to increasing awareness of the problem and providing strategies to help reduce food waste from farm to fork.
To address this important issue and to start a conversation about reducing our overabundance of food waste, we created the ReFresh Nebraska Newsletter. Every quarter, ReFresh Nebraska provides information about the effects of food waste, how and where it occurs along the supply chain, and what we can do to reduce it, both in the home, and among consumer facing businesses and organizations.
